The permanent mark in the corner of a pane saying who certified it, and to what.

Why It Matters

Hazardous location glazing is the requirement and this is the proof it was met. The building code wants each pane in such a location to carry a designation naming who applied it and the safety standard it complies with, acid etched, sandblasted, ceramic fired, laser etched, embossed or otherwise impossible to remove without destroying. The federal rule matters for a different reason. It defines a private labeler to include any fabricator or installer who cuts certified and permanently labeled glazing into smaller pieces, so cutting a labeled lite down in your own shop moves the certification duty onto the business being bought. Read the exception before treating an unmarked pane as a violation: for glass other than tempered, a building official may accept a certificate or affidavit instead, and tempered spandrel may carry a removable paper designation.
