Float origin duty

Definition

A duty that follows where the glass was floated, and not where it was cut or assembled.

Why It Matters

Orders in force since April 2026 put antidumping and countervailing duties on float glass products from China and countervailing duties on Malaysia, and the scope is what decides who is caught. Country of origin is where the soda-lime-silica glass was first floated over a bath of molten tin, regardless of the location of any downstream finishing or fabrication, and a product that is further worked stays inside the scope. Laminated glass and insulating glass units are named as included, at two millimeters thick and four square feet or more. So the two products carrying the longest lead times in this trade are inside it, and a buyer cannot clear the exposure by asking who fabricated the unit. Ask where the float came from on a year of orders, and what the cash deposit did to the quoted price.
