The contract length below which the automatic-renewal statutes stop applying.

Why It Matters

A weekly or monthly route escapes most of them. Florida, New York and Wisconsin all define the regulated automatic renewal as one for a period of more than one month, so a book billed monthly falls outside their disclosure and notice duties entirely. California is the exception worth checking a route against: its notice duty has a one-year floor, but its affirmative consent, its retainable acknowledgment and its requirement that a customer be able to cancel the same way they signed up carry no term floor at all. Read the billing period before assuming a recurring book is either covered or clear.
