Pool Service Term

Pool discharge destination

Definition

Where backwash and drained water may legally go, which is rarely the storm drain.

Why It Matters

Chlorinated pool water is barred from the storm drain almost everywhere, and the reason the wording differs in every town is federal: the stormwater rule makes each permitted system prohibit non-stormwater discharges through its own ordinance, and the short list of flows it may still allow names DECHLORINATED pool discharges. That one word is doing the work. Ohio goes further and requires new public pools to send backwash and drainage to a sanitary sewer through an air gap unless the state approves otherwise. For a route crossing city lines that means one substance and a dozen ordinances, so ask where each account's water actually goes.
