Scale weight

Definition

The weight the disposal site's own inspected scale records, which the tipping fee rides on.

Why It Matters

The tipping fee term says the cost arrives at the scale after the job is quoted, and this is the scale. The unit mismatch is the whole problem: the job is sold by volume, as a fraction of a truck, and bought by weight on somebody else's instrument. Weights and measures law is what stands behind that instrument. Washington registers commercial devices annually, adopts the national tolerance handbook, and sets penalties where a device is found wrong in its operator's favor. A bulk delivery ticket must state the weight, and the gross and tare where the weight came from those. Two things follow for a buyer. Per-load tickets are the only record that can rebuild margin on a single job, and the monthly invoice hides drift. And the instrument setting the largest variable cost belongs to the supplier.
