Reportable release

Definition

A spill big enough that the store must telephone it in the same day, measured by the chemical inside.

Why It Matters

The dealer record covers the pesticide that leaves by sale. This covers the one that leaves on the floor. Federal law sets a reportable quantity per substance: a hundred pounds for carbaryl or malathion, one pound for chlorpyrifos or diazinon. The count is of the constituent and not the product, so a forty percent concentrate needs about two hundred and fifty pounds to cross a hundred pound line. The exemption is the fact that decides most cases: a release exposing people only inside your own boundaries needs no emergency notification. So the store's drainage sets the exposure, and no seller's package contains it. Ask for two years of incident logs, the chemical list against the table, and whether the loading area drains to the lot.
