The approval class a storefront holds, distinct from the collector class that is just as large in the totals.

Why It Matters

Published totals for firearms approvals are misleading in a specific way: the collector class, which is a private individual and not a business, is as large as the dealer class. In fiscal 2023 there were 50,805 collector approvals against 50,309 dealer approvals, the dealer figure down more than ten percent from 56,181 in 2015. Use the dealer count when sizing the trade, because using the headline total overstates the number of shops by a factor of two and a half.
