The approval class a storefront holds, distinct from the collector class that dominates the totals.

Why It Matters

Published totals for firearms approvals are misleading in a specific way: the largest category by far is the collector class, which is a private individual and not a business. The storefront figure is the dealer class, and it stood at 50,309 in fiscal 2023, down more than ten percent from 56,181 in 2015. Use the dealer count when sizing the trade, because using the headline total overstates the number of shops by a factor of two and a half.
