The case numbers a stolen or lost firearm collects, and must carry in the shop's regulated book.

Why It Matters

The bound book term ends by saying a book that does not reconcile to the shelf is the first thing an inspection finds. This is the sentence after it. A theft or loss from inventory is reported to the federal authority within forty-eight hours of discovery, and to local authorities as well. Within seven days it enters the acquisition and disposition record as a disposition carrying two numbers, the federally issued one and the local police one. A buyer can check that without a lawyer: a disposition reading lost with no numbers beside it is an unreported loss. The records pass to the successor and not to the government, so the buyer takes custody of the evidence, and unreported thefts are the standard predicate for a revocation that ends the approval the deal is built on.
