Definition

The share of exams paid by vision plans, which set both the fee and the frame margin.

Why It Matters

A plan patient arrives without marketing and pays a rate the plan sets, and the same plan usually limits what the dispensary can earn on the glasses that follow. A practice at ninety percent plan volume is a busy practice running on somebody else's pricing. Ask for revenue per exam split by plan and by private pay, then ask what would happen to the schedule if the largest plan were dropped.
