HVAC Term

Classification boundary

Definition

Where the heating and cooling license stops and another trade's license starts.

Why It Matters

Three edges catch buyers. California puts refrigeration below fifty degrees in its own classification, so a company servicing walk-in coolers alongside rooftop units may need two. Gas fuel lines inside a building sit with plumbing in that state, and Florida writes the same carve-out from the other side, excluding fuel gas lines from the air-conditioning contractor's scope except for a straight appliance changeout. And the federal refrigerant certification belongs to the technician who could break into the circuit, not to the company, so it walks out of the building with whoever holds it. Read the work orders against the classifications before assuming one license covers the book.
