Locksmith Term
VSP credential
Definition
The personal registration that lets a technician buy key codes and immobilizer resets.
Why It Matters
Automotive key programming needs the manufacturer's data and this is what opens it. The Vehicle Security Professional registry is run by an industry task force under a secure data release model, and Massachusetts law points at that model by name for the immobilizer information a manufacturer is allowed to withhold from independent shops. Registration is issued to a PERSON, and only to an owner or a W-2 employee. The vetting is documentary: government photo identification, a federal employer identification number, a current business standing document, a state locksmith license where the state requires one, a certificate of insurance the agent sends directly, and two professional references. The insurance floor is a million dollars aggregate with five hundred thousand per event, plus a hundred thousand dollar dishonesty bond for each subordinate account. None of it conveys with the business, so an automotive key line resting on the departing owner's registration walks out on the last day.
