Sign classification

Definition

Which licensing board a sign business actually answers to, which is not always its own.

Why It Matters

The two states differ in a way that decides who regulates a buyer. California gives signs their own contractor classification covering electrical signs and their wiring, pole and wall signs, and modifications to existing ones. Florida routes them through the ELECTRICAL contracting board instead, as a specialty whose scope names the fabrication, erection, installation and maintenance of electrical and nonelectrical advertising signs with their supports. The record duty follows the contractor license and not the sign permit: five years of contracts, receipts and disbursements, open to the registrar, and no state rule found requires a sign company to keep its municipal permits at all.
