Pharmacist-in-charge (PIC)

Definition

The licensed pharmacist the state permit names as responsible for the store, required in every state.

Why It Matters

Every state requires one, and the state board reads the change of PIC as closely as the change of owner, so who holds the role on day one is a licensing question before it is a staffing one. If the seller is the PIC, their departure has to be sequenced with the permit transfer, the DEA registration and the payer contracting, or the store cannot bill. If an employed pharmacist holds it, their retention is the deal inside the deal. Lenders ask the question directly, and a buyer who is not a pharmacist answers it with a signed employment agreement, not a plan.
