Pharmacist-in-charge (PIC)

Definition

The licensed pharmacist responsible for a store's compliance, a role California and Florida both require.

Why It Matters

California's board must approve each proposed pharmacist-in-charge and issues no license without one, and Florida's investigates the one designated on the application, so who holds the role on day one is a licensing question before it is a staffing one. If the seller is the PIC, their departure has to be sequenced with the new permit, the DEA registration and the payer contracting, or the store cannot bill. If an employed pharmacist holds it, their retention is the deal inside the deal. Lenders ask the question directly, and a buyer who is not a pharmacist answers it with a signed employment agreement, not a plan.
