Linear-foot pricing

Definition

Quoting a fence by the running foot, with gates, corners and terrain priced separately or not at all.

Why It Matters

A per-foot number is how customers compare fencers, which makes it the first thing a seller shows you and the last thing that explains the margin. Slope, rock, tearing out an old fence and the number of gates move real cost per foot far more than the fence style does. Ask to see quoted price against actual cost on the last twenty jobs, sorted by terrain. A shop pricing flat across a hilly territory is paying for its hardest jobs out of its easiest ones.
