The Firm
Granite Construction traces itself to California construction license No. 89 and a hundred-year history, and runs construction and materials operations across Alaska, Arizona, California, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada from headquarters at 585 W. Beach Street in Watsonville. It calls itself one of the largest diversified construction and construction materials companies in the country.
For a dump truck or aggregate hauling owner, this is the buyer the trade actually produces. Granite does not buy fleets as fleets; it buys vertically, taking the yards and the trucks that feed asphalt plants it already owns or wants. Cinderlite came with five aggregate yards, a recycling yard and an established fleet of trucks and drivers in Carson City, and it was bought by a Granite subsidiary rather than the parent.
The rest of its buying says the same thing at larger scale: Lehman-Roberts and Memphis Stone & Gravel brought seven asphalt plants and three sand and gravel mines, and Warren Paving brought vertically integrated aggregates on the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast. A hauler whose customers are these plants should understand that its largest customer is also a plausible acquirer.
