Boring business

Definition

The nickname for an unglamorous small business that earns steady cash flow.

Why It Matters

The phrase is how a whole generation of buyers found this field, and it names a screen, not an industry. A laundromat, an HVAC contractor, a landscaping company or a car wash: a trade nobody starts for the glamour, with customers who come back whether or not anyone is paying attention. What makes such a business worth buying is the same thing that makes it boring, demand that does not depend on a trend. What makes it risky is the owner, who is often the sales team, the estimator and the bank relationship at once. Nearly every guide on this site is about one of them; the word to look past is boring, and the question to ask is how much of the cash flow leaves with the seller.

In numbers: A landscaping company doing $4.2M of revenue with $700k of SDE, whose owner still answers the phone, is exactly what the phrase means: it lists at roughly 3.5x, and the risk a buyer prices is the owner, not the market.
