The Firm
Heartland Dental was founded in 1997 by Dr. Rick Workman in Effingham, Illinois, where it is still based, and calls itself the nation's leading dental support organization: more than 1,900 supported practices and over 3,100 supported doctors nationwide. The model is the DSO bargain stated plainly on its own pages, non-clinical administrative support in exchange for affiliation, with clinical autonomy kept by the dentist.
Its growth is published monthly, which is rare candor among consolidators: the May 2026 spotlight alone names three new affiliations, in western New York, Florida, and Missouri, alongside five newly built offices, and the cadence repeats month after month. An affiliation is the DSO version of an acquisition, the practice's business side changes hands while the doctor stays in the chair.
For a dental searcher, Heartland is less a rival bidder than the number to beat: any practice owner considering a sale has a standing DSO offer available, and a buyer's bid competes with that offer's certainty even when no DSO is in the room. Anyone meeting the company should know the 1997 Workman founding, the Effingham base, the support-versus-ownership framing it insists on, and the monthly growth spotlight, which is the trade's most public consolidation ledger.
Read again in September 2026: the monthly spotlights since May affiliated four more practices, two in July and two in August, each named with a state only, while the de novo openings ran to twenty in the same months. The September spotlight had not posted by the twentieth.
