# SMEVentures

Funded search across Australia and New Zealand.

An Australia and New Zealand search platform that funds a searcher's expenses and a modest salary for up to two years, then backs the acquisition and sits on the board alongside two or three investors while the searcher runs the business as CEO. Its own pages list eight transactions naming nine businesses in Australia and New Zealand, dated from August 2021 to April 2026, every one still run by the person who bought it.

## At a Glance

The Asia Pacific answer where this shelf otherwise stops at Europe, and the wrong door for a US [searcher](https://searchspheresource.com/glossary/searcher): read the five-to-ten-year CEO commitment before the funded search.

- Track Record: Nine businesses bought across Australia and New Zealand in eight transactions from August 2021 to April 2026, two of them bolt-ons, every one still operating under the owner who bought it, and more than $75M invested, by its advisers page. Its own survey post says every entrepreneur it has partnered with who completed a search bought a business.
- Lane: Employed
- Funds: The search phase and the deal
- In the Round: Says it leads or anchors, so it is a call to make early.
- Based: Singapore, with a Sydney contact number.
- Invests: Australia and New Zealand only, by the page behind its apply button, and every named deal is Australian or New Zealand.
- Buys: Businesses with $5M to $50M of sales and $1.5M to $6M of EBITDA on its home page; its advisers page says A$1.5M to A$7M of EBITDA at margins above 10%, an enterprise value of A$3M to A$50M, and an owner selling 90% to 100%.
- Before A First Call: No money of your own. Its own page states that most of the funding comes from its existing investor base and that no capital investment is required from you.
- First-Time Operators: Says in its own words that it backs people running a company for the first time.
- How Long The Search Runs: Search capital covering expenses and a modest salary for up to two years of searching, raised from its own investor base rather than from you.
- Published Terms: Raises the search capital itself, covering expenses and a modest salary for up to two years.
- What A Searcher Gets: It states outright that no capital investment is required from the searcher. The equity earned is described only as a big chunk, never as a percentage.
- After The Close: Expects the searcher to run the company as CEO for five to ten years, with the firm and two or three investors on the board.

## What It Costs

Investment terms rather than fees, and none of them are published as numbers. Its own page says the search capital covers expenses and a modest salary for up to two years, and that no capital investment is required from the searcher. It says the searcher earns a big chunk of equity, which is the only description of the split it gives.

## Best For

Operators searching in Australia or New Zealand who want a funded search rather than a raise of their own; its application page says it is not the right fit for anyone buying in another market

## Pros and Cons

- Pro: [Search capital](https://searchspheresource.com/glossary/search-capital) covers expenses and a modest salary for up to two years, with no capital required from the searcher
- Pro: Eight transactions naming nine businesses, dated August 2021 to April 2026 with months on its advisers page, so the model has closings behind it rather than a plan
- Pro: The only Australia and New Zealand route on this shelf, in an ecosystem whose funded paths are almost all North American or European
- Con: Australia and New Zealand are where every named deal is, which puts it out of reach for a searcher buying in the United States
- Con: The commitment after closing is five to ten years running the business as CEO by one page and seven to ten by its application page, longer than the other funded lanes here ask for
- Con: The searcher's equity is described only as a big chunk and never given a percentage, where two firms on this shelf publish theirs
- Con: Its about page lags its home page by two closings and a year, so which of its people is still searching has to be read from the newer page

## What Searchers Say

Coverage of the Australia and New Zealand search lane is thin outside the firm's own channels, and it runs a podcast and a blog, so most of what is written about it is written by it. Its own survey of the region's [search funds](https://searchspheresource.com/glossary/search-fund) says every entrepreneur it partnered with who completed a search went on to buy, four of four at the time and six of six since. The founder's own account dates the firm to 2020, its about page to 2019, and says that until 2019 any Australian entrepreneur who wanted to raise a search fund failed; the company itself is a Singapore entity by its privacy policy.
