### Buy Then Build (Walker Deibel)

The case for buying instead of starting.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: Book is sold through Amazon at standard retail book prices; buythenbuild.com links out and does not publish the book price. On the vendor's own pages: Acquisition Insights mini-course $99 one-time; BTB Masterclass $1,500 one-time (listed at $3,000, discounted), lifetime access, Klarna financing at checkout. Acquisition Lab accelerator is a separate offering with pricing not published. The author's own site also gives away a newsletter and a three-day video series, and sells an insights subscription at $99 and a masterclass at $1,500 against a $3,000 list, with lifetime access and two bonus courses.
- Best for: The person still deciding whether to pursue acquisition at all, pre-search, pre-thesis, who wants the standard mental model and vocabulary the ETA community assumes you know. Not for searchers already under LOI or looking for current SBA/diligence mechanics.

### HBR Guide to Buying a Small Business (Ruback & Yudkoff)

The HBS guide to buying and running a company.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: Paperback $21.95 from the publisher (store.hbr.org), 320 pages, published February 2017, with quantity discounts from 20% at ten copies to 55% above twenty-five hundred. The same authors' two digital articles sell beside it at $11.95 each.
- Best for: The rigor-first reader who wants the academic-practitioner version of the on-ramp, and anyone drawn to smaller, enduringly profitable businesses rather than growth stories

### Built to Sell (John Warrillow)

The classic on making a business sellable.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: The book sells at standard retail (Portfolio/Penguin, 2011). builttosell.com promotes it alongside the author's free assessments (the Value Builder Score, PREScore, and Freedom Score) rather than publishing a book price, and cross-sells the Value Builder System, a separate paid advisor program whose pricing is not published. Verified via the book's Goodreads page and builttosell.com.
- Best for: An owner one to three years from selling who wants a framework for reducing owner-dependence, and a buyer who wants the same transferability lens for screening how sellable (and de-riskable) a target really is. Not a source for deal mechanics: LOI terms, QoE, tax, and financing all live elsewhere.

### The E-Myth Revisited (Michael E. Gerber)

Why the business cannot run without its owner.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: A book, sold in every format. The author's own site carries the series and no price on the pages read, so the figure depends on edition and retailer rather than on anything published at source.
- Best for: Understanding the owner-dependence you are about to inherit, before you inherit it

### The Messy Marketplace (book)

How smaller companies actually get sold.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: The second edition, published September 2024 at 196 pages, sells in paperback around $16.73 against an $18.99 list, in ebook at $9.99 and in hardcover at $34.57. It is not given away in any form the publisher links, and the book's own former domain is now a parked lander.
- Best for: Buyers who want to understand the seller's side of the table well enough to be the buyer a good seller chooses, especially on process, emotion, and why deals really die

### The Outsiders (Will Thorndike)

Eight CEOs judged on where the cash went.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: $32.00 from the publisher (store.hbr.org, read August 2026), whose own page also tells a buyer to see the retailer for the price; sold in every format at standard retail. Published October 23, 2012.
- Best for: The buyer who has closed, or is about to, and now has to decide what the business does with the cash it throws off. It is not a how-to for buying and it teaches neither search nor diligence.

### The Sweaty Startup (book)

The case for simple service businesses.

- Pricing model: One-Time
- What it costs: Standard trade-book pricing in hardcover, ebook, and audio; sold everywhere books are. The author's own site sells courses beside it at published prices, from $299 for hiring to $2,500 for the real estate masterclass, and a newsletter he puts at more than 205,000 readers.
- Best for: Pressure-testing the buy decision itself: a widely read case for starting a boring service business with little capital instead of borrowing seven figures to buy one
