# Pool discharge destination

A term used when buying pool service.

Where backwash and drained water may legally go, which is rarely the storm drain.

Chlorinated pool water is barred from the storm drain almost everywhere, and the reason the wording differs in every town is federal. The stormwater rule makes each permitted system prohibit non-stormwater discharges through its own ordinance, and the short list of flows it may still allow names DECHLORINATED pool discharges. That one word is doing the work. Ohio goes further and requires new and substantially altered public pools to send backwash and drainage to a sanitary sewer through an air gap unless its environmental agency approves otherwise. Cartridge filters sit outside that duty, which is why two accounts on one street can have different answers. For a route crossing city lines that means one substance and a dozen ordinances, so ask where each account's water actually goes.
