How many families a home serves in a year, the demand figure behind every other number here.

Case volume moves slowly and is driven by reputation and the community around the home, which makes it both the most reliable number in the business and the one most exposed to a [change of ownership](https://searchspheresource.com/glossary/change-of-ownership). A family that chooses a home by the name over the door is choosing the seller. Read five years of case counts rather than one, ask how much comes from preneed maturing against at-need calls, and ask what happens to volume if the seller's name comes off the sign.
