# Board jurisdiction

A term used when buying barbershop.

Which state board licenses and inspects the shop, since barbering and cosmetology are not always one.

Florida runs barbering and cosmetology as separate chapters with separate boards, and Ohio merged both into a single state cosmetology and barber board. The answer decides who inspects the shop, which services it may legally sell, and whether a barber and a stylist can work the same floor without a second license on the wall. Florida's barbering definition takes in coloring hair but not nails, so a shop there that has quietly added nail services may be operating outside what its own license covers, a finding that surfaces in a complaint and not in the books. Ask which board issued the license and read that board's rules on what the shop may do.
