## The Firm

Energy Services of America is a public company (Nasdaq: ESOA) headquartered at 75 West 3rd Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. It describes itself as a contractor and service company operating primarily in the mid-Atlantic and Central regions, serving customers in the natural gas, petroleum, water distribution, automotive, chemical and power industries. Its own site claims more than 1,300 employees across twelve states.

What makes it worth knowing for a trades searcher is the shape of its buying. It does not buy books of work or roll brands together; it buys operating companies and runs them as subsidiaries under the names they already had, which is how Heritage Painting came in through Nitro Construction Services rather than as a Nitro branch. Three of its last four purchases were single-trade contractors of exactly the size a self-funded buyer bids on.

The trades it has bought sit next to each other on a jobsite rather than in one category: industrial painting, water and wastewater installation, and HVAC control systems.
